Constituency Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Wa West, Mr. Bukari Seidu, has challenged members of the party to bury their hatchets and ensure that the Wa West seat is wrestled from the “incompetent” National Democratic Congress (NDC) in this year’s general election. He said anything short of winning the seat will be detrimental to the fortunes of the party in subsequent elections.

Chairman Seidu stressed that “if we fail to win the Wa West seat this 2020, then nobody should think he can salvage it for the NPP in the 2024 elections. The excuse over the past years has been that the NDC candidate (Hon. Joseph Yelle Chireh) is experienced and has large following for his many years in politics, which our leaders always acknowledge. He however will not be on the ballot in 2020. So what excuse will we give to our leaders if we lose the seat to a candidate just known three months ago?”

Mr. Bukari indicated that failure to win the seat will not be a shame to only him as chairman, but to the entire membership of the party in the constituency.

The chairman made these comments while addressing patriots at the inauguration ceremony of Wa West Youth Wing at Wechiau on Saturday, January 11, 2020.

He said it is very important to have a member of parliament while the party is in power as he will be a link between the constituents and the presidency. He cited the Nandom and Lawra constituencies as reference, saying many youth in the two constituencies have been able to get employment into the various security forces because they have parliamentary representatives to drum home their needs to the president. Same, he said, cannot be said of the Wa West.

Speaking to the theme of the occasion, “Reenergizing the Youth for Victory 2020”, Chairman Seidu said the youth is the bedrock of every political party since they form the majority in any community. He said “with a vibrant youth front in any polling station, the party is capable of winning that place.” He therefore pledged his support for the Youth Wing and urged all youth organizers and women organizers to play an active role in ensuring the NPP wins the Wa West seat in 2020.

Buttressing the point, former NPP parliamentary candidate for the Wa West in 2012, Adams Nuhu Timbile, said the opportunity presented in 2020 “is a penalty given for the NPP to score” in the constituency, and failure to do so will be dangerous for the party going forward. He agreed with Chairman Bukari Seidu that it will be difficult to win the seat again if it is not won this year. Nuhu Timbile also stated that “Lanchene (Peter Toobu) cannot beat us to the seat”, adding that it is not time for him to annex the seat.

The Inauguration Ceremony organized under the auspices of the Wa West Youth organizer, Abdul Wahab Dabo-naa, was well attended by party stalwarts from within and without the constituency. They included the District Chief Executive, Hon Sabo Laabir; the 2020 Parliamentary Candidate, Daniel Dari Kuusogno; the NPP Constituency chairman, Seidu Bukari; the assemblyman for the Guo Electoral Area and immediate past Presiding Member of the Wa West District Assembly, Mr. Osman Adams and the 2012 Parliamentary Candidate, Adams Nuhu Timbile.

Others are the NPP Regional Secretary, Isaac Alitu; the Regional Communication Director, Ali Bukari; the Regional Youth Organizer, Luri Tia John-Bosco; former Wa West Constituency chairman, Alhaji Abudi Seidu (Major); and Youth Organizers and representatives from other constituencies.
