The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday, January 11, 2020, launched a youth working committee in the Wa West constituency to augment the work of the party hierarchy to ensure victory in the upcoming general elections. The party at the inauguration of the 18-members Youth Wing also called for all party members to bury all differences and continue to work to keep the party in power.
Addressing participants at the event, the Wa West Constituency Youth Organizer, Mr. Dabo-Naa Abdul Wahab, said “the strength of a party rests on the shoulders of the youth”. He said it was always his desire since assuming office as the constituency youth organizer to see to it that the youth of the party play active role in ensuring victory for the party. The Youth Commander stated that “the idea of the Youth Wing is to allow for the sharing of ideas that will ensure that Hon Daniel Dari Kuusogno, the Parliamentary Candidate, is declared winner at the close of polls in December 2020” alongside president Akufo-Addo. He said it was important to have such a committee since the two youth organizers cannot be everywhere to run campaigns, and therefore charged the committee to work assiduously for the party ahead of the 2020 elections.
Mr. Dabo-Naa also called on the youth to “be patient with our party leaders and elders. We are the leaders tomorrow. As we see them at the top today, they are not going to sit there forever. Some of us looking at them now will be at the top one day”. He continued that, with patience the fortunes of the party will improve which will benefit all members. The Youth Organizer lamented on the failure of the party to win the seat even though the constituency was birthed by the NPP. He therefore stressed that “our ultimate aim is to have a Member of Parliament while NPP is in power. That way there will exist more opportunities for the grassroots.” He however said this can be made possible if members stop petty squabbles and work together towards achieving the dream.
The District Chief Executive, Edward Laabir Sabo who was the Guest of Honour, lauded the youth organizer for the initiative and pledged to fund any budget of the Youth Wing to aid their work towards victory 2020. Hon Sabo Laabir also pleaded with party members to desist from looking down on anybody and rather respect one another irrespective of their position in the party. He said barring unnecessary qualms among patriots, the work done under his watch compared to the eight years of the erstwhile NDC administration is enough to wrestle the seat from the NDC. The DCE further challenged the regional executive to reconcile the rank and file of the party across all constituencies in the region.
On his part, the constituency chairman, Bukari Seidu, cautioned party members against hastening to make conclusions without first ascertaining all facts. He said every member of the party must strive to promote unity. According to Chairman Seidu, the NPP suffered in Wa West in the last election due to petty arguments and discontent among members. He therefore urged all to eschew any confusion and work together to win the seat.
The 2020 Parliamentary Candidate, Hon Daniel Dari Kuusogno, apologized unreservedly for any wrong he may have done against any party member knowingly or unknowingly, thus asked for their forgiveness and support. He said it is possible together, and therefore urged party faithful to engage in positive activities that will help in annexing the seat. Mr. Kuusogno noted that he is opened to ideas from all party persons that will help deliver the seat.
Also declaring his support for Daniel Kuusogno to win the seat, former parliamentary candidate for the party in 2012, Adams Nuhu Timbile, directed his followers to join the campaign to ensure that victory is declared for the NPP after December 7, 2020. He further called on all other factions and grieving members to settle their differences and ensure the seat doesn’t elude the party again. Hon Nuhu Timbile also advised disgruntled patriots who feel they have not benefited since the party came to power to exercise patience and keep the party in power as many stand to benefit if the NPP continues to be in power than when it is out of power.
The Regional Youth Organizer who swore the eighteen members into office charged them to cooperate with the party leadership and be effective and diligent in the discharge of their duties. He also took the opportunity to implore all members of the party to “work assiduously (and to) stop complaining, stop lamenting, and most importantly stop expecting. It is only in expectation that there is disappointment.” He urged them to be focused and “salvage the seat from the sinking NDC leadership”.
Regional Communication Director of the NPP, Bukari Ali, also admonished communicators of the party to stop attacking one another on media platforms. He suggested that social media platforms should be used to educate one another about the works of the government instead of using it to settle personal scores. Mr. Bukari said it is very wrong to attack or discredit a party member in public as that has the tendency of tarnishing the image of the party. He was confident the Wa West seat will be delivered if members will channel their energy in convincing people to vote for the NPP in December 2020.
Meanwhile the Upper West Regional Secretary of the NPP, Isaac Alitu, expressed sadness for not winning the Wa West seat since its creation. He said even though Wa West was the first to be mentioned among the four constituencies that were created in the Upper West region in 2004, it is still the constituency which is yet to thank the NPP for giving it that status. “The Wa East won the seat for the NPP for the first elections there, Sissala West won the seat in 2016, Lambussie also paid their dues in time past as they won the seat before. So it is time for Wa West to also thank the NPP by winning the seat this year”. He stated, but was quick to add that “it will not come easy unless we sit up and work. We must stop the bickering and rather see to the interest of the party”. Mr. Alitu charged leading members in the constituency to throw away bitterness from the primaries and come together to fight for victory.
The Inauguration of the Youth Wing themed “Reenergizing for Victory 2020” was well attended by party stalwarts from within and without the constituency. They included the DCE for Wa West, Hon Sabo Laabir; the 2020 Parliamentary Candidate, Daniel Dari Kuusogno; the NPP Constituency chairman, Seidu Bukari; the assemblyman for the Guo Electoral Area and immediate past Presiding Member of the Wa West District Assembly, Mr. Osman Adams and the 2012 Parliamentary Candidate, Adams Nuhu Timbile.
Others were the NPP Regional Secretary, Isaac Alitu; the Regional Communication Director, Ali Bukari; the Regional Youth Organizer, Luri Tia John-Bosco; former Wa West Constituency chairman, Alhaji Abudi Seidu (Major); and Youth Organizers and representatives from other constituencies.
