The District Chief Executive for Wa East District in the Upper West Region, Dr Ewurah Sulemani Kandia has cut-sod for the opening of a 19km Virgin Road from Kundugu to Belekpong in the Wa East District.
The 19km government of Ghana funded road will link about three communities; Chawuli, Jabaga and Belekpong. This, according to the DCE is part of the government of Ghana’s effort to improve economic activities in the area.
Dr Ewurah Sulemani Mahama Kandia described the “opening” of the road as a sigh of relieve to the beneficiary communities. ” The people here have yerned for the construction of this road for a very long time, so seeing work commence on the road gives them so much joy” he said. Dr. Kandia used the opportunity to express his profound gratitude to His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and NPP government for the initiative.
The DCE further cautioned the contractor (ASHCAL general trading and construction) to work in cordiality with the communities to deliver nothing but quality work.
He equally assured the contractor of the assembly’s cooperation.
On his part, the Assembly member of the area Hon Dramani Kofi Hashim disclosed that, between June/July 2021 every year(rainy season), the people of Belekpong and it’s adjoining communities could not access the market at kundugu; which is the major trading hub in the area. “Bellekpong and other communities along the road are cut off from accessing health services and social amenities in Kundugu” he added.
Balibie Abu Iddirisu a commuter alleged that two persons lost their lives whiles attempting to cross the stormy waters during the rainy season to their farms. He noted that the lack of motorable road from Kundugu to Belekpong has denied several pregnant women health care.
The engineer at ASHCAL general trading and construction Michael Tuoyang assured the community of quality work and a good working relationship during the periods of the road construction. He however indicated that, since it is a Virgin road, the estimates and duration of the project will be ascertained after the clearing of the road.
